وحاول المؤلف أن يرسم الصورة التى كونها بونابرت عن الحياة اليومية فى مصر كما رآها بنفسه, وتحديداً فى القاهرة. وفى الوقت نفسه كان المصريون يراقبون - بتحفظ وشك - الجنرال وجيشه وعلماءه الذين قلبوا بأعمالهم عادات المصريين فى التفكير والعمل.
لقد أدخل الفرنسيون أدوات وتقنيات جديدة للعمل فى مصر (المطبعة والمكتبة…) إلا أن المصريين رفضوا كل ما جاء به الفرنسيون، ولم يكونوا مستعدين لتقبل هذا الكم من الأشياء الحديثة. وتطلب الأمر مرور أربعين سنه لكى يستطيع محمد على وضع أقدام المصريين على طريق التحديث.
