علي بن داود بن إبراهيم المعروف بالخطيب الجوهري وبابن الصيرفي ممن أسهموا في كتابة التاريخ وشغلوا أنفسهم بالنظر فيه، وهو من أهل القرن التاسه للهجرة، فقد ولد سنة 819 هـ، ومات سنة ختام هذا القرن أعني عام 900 هـ، وبذلك عاش فترة أربت على ثلاثة أرباع القرن كانت حياته خلالها موزعة بين العكل لكسب قوته ورزق أولاده وبين النظر في كتب التاريخ وتدوينه، وهو بين هذا وذاك مقبل إقبالاً مجزوءاً أحياناً- تاماً أحياناً أخرى قليلة- على ما كان يدرس في ذلك العصر، متتلمذاً كلما أتيحت له الفرصة على أيدي من نبه الجيل باسهم من شيوخ مختلف الفنون التي اهتم بها والتي كانت لها الصدارة وقتذاك، ولقد وجد ابن الصيرفي في عصرحفل بالكثيرين من كتاب التاريخ في مصر والشام وهو عصر قل أن شاهدت كتابة التاريخ مثله في الكثرة العددية من المهتمين بها، سواء أكانت هذه الكتابة تاريخاً بحتاً أو تراجم أو الإثنين معاً وهو الغالب، ولقد كتب في هذا الموضوع بعض الكتاب المحدثين مما لا يدع مجالاً في هذه الصفحات القلائل للإعادة، ولكن ثم مميزات اختصت بها هذه الحقبة من حيث الكتابة التاريخية التي اتسمت بما ظهر فيها من اتجاه إلىتدوين تاريخ شامل لعصر الكاتب الذي عاش فيه وإن قدم له في الغالب بإلمامه قد تطول- وهذا هو الأكثر- فترجع إلى الوراء البعيد حتى لتطغى الإلمامة على العصر ذاته، ومثال ذلك كتاب البداية والنهاية لابن كثير، وكتاب الجوهري: نزهة نفوس الأبدان.
