يضم الكتاب جمهرة من أشعار العرب في الجاهلية والإسلام حيث ذكر المؤلف ما جاءت به الأخبار المنقولة، والأشعار المحفوظة عنهم، وما وافق القرآن من ألفاظهم، وما روي عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، في الشعر والشعراء، وما جاء عن أصحابه والتابعين من بعدهم، وما وصف به كل واحد منهم، وأول من قال الشعر، وما حفظ عن الجن. وقد بلغ تعداد هذه الأشعار تسع وأربعون قصيدة في سبع طبقات أو محاور وهكذا في كل محور سبعة من كبار الشعراء جاهليين أو إسلاميين.
ومصنف هذا الكتاب هو محمد بن أبي الخطاب الذي اشتهر بين الأدباء المصنفين بأبي زيد القرشي، وهو من أشهر رواة الشعر، كما كان عالماً ذا معرفة بالشعر والشعراء وقرن إلى العلم بالشعر ذوقاً، ورهافة حسّ وإدراكاً لأهمية هذا الفن ومكانته في بيئة العرب وفي الدلالة على واقع هذه البيئة، فانبرى يصطفي من قصائد الجاهليين والإسلاميين نخبتها أو صفوتها وراح يرتبها تبعا لمعاييره ويقسم أصحابها بحسب أغراضهم ومذاهبهم في الشعر فغدا بذلك مصنفاً.
