بداية فلقد كان عامر السند الأساسي والأمين للنظام طيلة السنوات الأربعة عشر التى قاد خلالها القوات المسلحة، هذا أكيد، لكن الأكيد بالمقابل هو أن ثمن ذلك كان باهظا على تركبية النظام وسمعته وأدائه. جمع عامر بين السياسي والعسكرى في مزيج أدى إلى خروج الجيش بعيداً جداً عن مهمته الأصلية في حماية الوطن وحماية النظام، ومع بلوغ المنطقة عتبة الحرب في يونيه كان عبد الحكيم عامر الأول مكرراً بامتياز.
هذا الصعيدى الشهم الذى افتتن به ضباطه لكونه ولى النعم الكريم المدرار عرف أيضاً بفروسية طباعه ودماثته ودفئه الودود. وطيلة السنوات التسع ما بين 52-61 كان عامر مثالاً للالتزام العائلي وحسن السلوك والسيرة. صدق فيه حينها وصف عبد الناصر له أنه "كان قطة مغمضة".
والثابت أن ذهابه لدمشق حاكماً لها في أكتوبر59 كان نقطة تحول إلى مسار مسلكى مغاير، مما يوحى ببساطة إلى أن التزامه الخلقي كان -فى جانب غير يسير منه- بسبب خشيته من اكتشاف عبد الناصر لأي مزالق مسلكية له. هذا هو المشير الانسان والعسكرى ايضاً.
