هذه صفحة مفعمة بالحياة لأحوال مصر الاجتماعية والثقافية والاقتصادية بل والسياسية في منتصف القرن التاسع عشر، يزيد من قيمتها ان كاتبها ليس بشخص عادي وإنما رحالة عالم طبقت شهرته الآفاق هو الأيرلندي ريتشارد بيرتون الذي زار مصر في غضون سنة 1853 اى في اواخر عهد عباس باشا الول (1848- 1854) وكانت مصر يومئذ تمر بمرحلة انتقال خطيرة كان لها أبعادها الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والثقافية.
يصف بيرتون وصوله إلى مصر عن طريق الاسكندرية ثم إقامته في القاهرة والاحتفال بشهر رمضان هناك ثم رحلته إلى السويس في طريقه إلى زيارة الجزيرة العربية ، وبها المدينة المنورة ومكة المكرمة.
