تغطي أهوار العراق ستة آلاف ميل مربع تقريباً من العراق حول القرنه وحيث يلتقي دجلة والفرات شمال البصرة يشكلا معاً شط العرب. وهي تتكون من أهوار دائمية وأخرى موسمية، ويمكن تقسيم منطقة الأهوار الوسطى: غرب دجلة وشمال الفرات، والأهوار الجنوبية جنوب الفرات وغرب شط العرب.
وفي هذا الكتاب يقدم المؤلف وهو رحالة عاش في جنوب العراق من نهاية 1951 حتى حزيران 1958، يقدم صورة حية عن الأهوار وعن الناس الذين يعيشون هناك مستعيناً بذكرياته وما يدعمها من يومياته المدونة. وهو لا يدعي أنه قدم دراسة مفصلة عن سكان الأهوار لأن المنطقة التي غطتها رحلاته كانت محدودة. وهو يروي قصة إبحاره في مناطق الأهوار الشرقية سافراً إلى أقاصي المنطقة.
