لعل هذا الذي يكتب عنه لأول مرة من وجهة النظر الوثائقية- على حد علمي- من أهم الموضوعات التي رأيت دراستها، لتوجيه نظر باحثي ومتخصصي علم الوثائق والعلوم السماعد له، إلى أهمية هذا المرجع الموسوعي بالنسبة للوثائق العربية بصفة عامة، ووثائق العصر العثماني على وجه الخصوص، حيث لاحظت أن كثيراً من هؤلاء الباحثين يغفلون الإطلاع على تلك الموسوعة الشاملة، لأسباب متعددة، قد يكون منها لغة الكتاب الفرنسية، وهي ليست متوفرة لكثير من الباحثين، وأن كان هذا ليس عذراً في اعتقادي، ومن هنا رأيت القيام ببحث يسد لاثغرة، ويلفت نظر الباحثين في مجال الوثائق والعلوم المساعدة لهذا المصنف الضخم الذي يضم أدق التفاصيل التي يحتاج إليها الباحثون في مجال الوثائق، علماً بأنني كنت أحث طلبه وطلبات الماجستير والدكتوراة بجامعاتنا، من وقت لآخر على الرجوع إلى هذا الكتبا حثاً، وكنت أجد من كثير منهم عدم التحمس أول الأمر ولكن عندما تقع أيديهم وأعينهم على معلومات قلما توجد بدقة في مرجع آخر يدركون أهميته على الفور، ون هنا رأيت أن أفرد لهذا الموضوع بحثاً مستقلاً، يعين الدارسين والباحثين، بما يضمه من معلومات جديدة من الوثائق وعلاقتها بكتاب وصف مصر، متمثلة بنماذج مقتبسة مننصوص الوثائق وما يمكن أن تقدمه تلك الموسوعة من إضافات وتحقيقات لما يرد في الوثائق، والعكس، ولا يخفى مالذلك من أهمية في تحقيق ونشر الوثائق، وقد تناولت فيه الحملة الفرنسية على مصر ونتائجها العلمية، ثم تناولت كتاب وصف مصر بالشرح والوصف؛أجزاؤه لوحاته خرائطه، محتوياته ثم افردت للدراسة الخاصة بأهمية الكتاب وعلاقته بدراسة الوثائق النصيب الأكبر وقد تناولت من الموضوعات أهم المجالات التي يمكن تحقيق الوثائق عن طريقها، كالنظم والمؤسسات، الضرائب، الإحصاء، الموازين والمقاييس والمسكوكات، وغيرها. وقد حرصت على تدعيم البحث قدر الإمكان بمقتبسات من الوثائق والسجلات والدفاتر والمحفوظة بدار الوثائق القومية بالقاهرة وغيرها نم أماكن الحفظ وإتماماً للفائدة رأيت أن أضع عدة ملاحق تضم: (لوحة (1) نموذج للنقود المستعملة في مصر وقت الحملة مصورة من كتاب وصف مصر، قائمة بأهم علماء الحملة الفرنسية الذين ساهموا في إعداد هذه الموسوعة، قوائم محتويات أجزاء الحالة الحاضرة منكتاب وصف مصر).
