أصل هذا الكتاب (مقالة) للأثري الشهير عز تلو أحمد بك كمال / أمين المتحف المصري في القاهرة بعث بها إلى مجلة "الآثار" اللبنانية لصاحبها عيسى اسكندر المعلوف. تغطي المقالة (الفنون في الصناعات المصرية القديمة) وفيها يقف المؤلف على حقيقة الفنون والصناعة المصرية ودقتها وبديع إتقانها. أما تاريخها فيبدأ مع المؤلف بعصر الأعناء وهم سكان مصر الأُوَل قبل ألفي سنة من عصر الملك مينا أول فراعنة مصر، وتظهر فيه كلام على "الزينة البدنية" بقوله: أعلم أن أهل العصور الأولى كانوا يزينون أجسامهم بالألوان الممثلة لحيوان، أو بخطوط معرجة كتمثال المرأة الذي وجد في طوخ وهذه الزينة تعرف عندنا الآن بالوشم ..."، وأما في عصر الفراعنة يظهر استعمال الأقراط وانتشاره في عصر الأسرة الثامنة عشرة، وكان بعض الرجال أيضاً يتقرط ... ومن الصور التي يقدمها المؤلف عن أهل ذلك الزمن أن "النساء يثبتن شعورهن المنظم بعضها فوق بعض بالأمشاط والدبابيس، وكانت من العظم أو العاج .." وكان "البرقع" من الآثار المأثورة عند الإعناء في مصر القديمة إلى آخر ذلك من زينة الأعضاء من فرز وحلي تعرف بالبرق والأساور والحجول والعقود وخواتم صنعت من العاج.
وفي فن البناء (المعمار) نصوص تخبرنا عن الفراعنة أنهم بنو لبتاح أو لأمون، أو لحوريس، أو غيره من المعبودات معابد زخرفت بالبرونز والذهب والفضة والأحجار الكريمة وكثيراً ما يذكر لنا "أن البناء صنع من حجر الجرانيت (الأعبل) ليدوم طويلاً، وأن المعبودات تثني على صاحبه مخبرة إياه بأن بناءه سيدوم ما دامت السماء" ... وفنون أخرى.
يتألف الكتاب من عشرة عناوين هي: "بحث اثري عام" ، "عصر الإعناء" ، "الكلام على الزينة البدنية" ، "زينة الأعضاء" ، "الملابس" ، "المآزر" ، "فن البناء (المعمار)" ، الكلام على التماثيل" ، "في التصوير" ، "قول المؤرخين في الزجاج" و "المرايا".
