هذا الكتاب هو محاولة لدراسة بعض أعمال كتاب القصة القصيرة بمختلف انتماءاتهم الفكرية، وتباين الفترات الزمنية، التى قدموا فيها إبداعهم، والكتاب لا يتحدث عن أجيال بالمفهوم التقليدى، لمصطلح جيل، ولكنه يحاول البحث عن مدى إحساس الكتاب الذين ظهرت إبداعاتهم فى مجال القصة القصيرة –فى نهايات القرن الماضى- وإدراكهم للمتغيرات الكثيرة التى حدثت فى مجتمعنا، وبشكل يكمل صورة اهتمام القصة بالتعبير عن تلك المتغيرات، كما اهتمت بها منذ نشأتها، والمتغيرات المعاصرة كثيرة منها: حرب أكتوبر، وما تبعها من تطورات اجتماعية، وسياسية، واقتصادية، وظهور التيارات التى ارتدت رداء الدين، وحاولت النيل من سلامة المجتمع، تلك التيارات التى أفرزت نوعا جديدا من الإرهاب الفكرى.
