دعانى إلى تصنيف هذا الكتاب، ما وجدت من إعراض الطلاب عن هذا العلم، واستسخافهم له، وبرمهم به، مع سهولته ويسره، ودنو مطلبه. ولقد هديت إلى أن سر هذا الضيق هو الطريق الذى درج عليها التأليف فيه، فالمؤلف يحشد نحو خمسين مصطلحاً عروضياً، ويطلب إلى التلميذ أن يستوعبها حفظاً وإدراكاً، دون أن يفهم ما خلقت لأجله. لذا فقد نثرت إلى حفظ شئ يجهل مرماه، فقد نثرت المصطلحات العروضية فى البحور نثراً وعرضت لها عند الحاجة إليها، وإن دعا إلى التكرير. ثم بدأت بالبحور ذوات التفعيلة الواحدة المكررة، ثم بالبحرين ذوى التفعيلتين المكررتين، ثم بالأبحر ذوات التفعيلات المختلفة، ليكون للطالب عند عبورة الأبحر الأولى على مرانه تمكنه من جواز ما بعدها، وهكذا. وإلتزمت أن يكون كل مثال فى كل ضرب عبارة عن بيتين، وإتماماً للفائدة أتبعت كل بحر بتدريبات منوعة مصنفة. ثم أتبعتها بتطبيقات عامة.
