تعد أبنية المعابد من أهم الأنماط في عمارة بلاد الرافدين، وكان بناء المعبد يمثل بداية التمدُّن، ونواة المدينة التي تقوم حولها المباني، بصفتها واسطة الإرتباط بين المدينة والإله حسب مفهوم القدماء.
أتاحت التنقيبات الأثرية التي أجريت في أبنية المعابد والزقورات إعتماداً على مخططاتها ومتابعة الأنظمة العمارية المتبعة في إنشائها إلى تحديد عدد من الخصائص المميزة لها والتي اكتسب وجودها صفة الثبات لعمارة المعابد القديمة.
ومن هنا، يأتي أهمية الموضوع في التركيز والبحث على دراسة العناصر العمارية الأساسية لتخطيط المعابد ذات المحور الطولي ومقارنتها مع بعضها، ومحاولة تأصيلها وبيان الهدف من إستخدام هذا المحور حسب إعتقادهم، ودور المحور على تخطيط المعبد وعناصره العمارية الأساسية من حيث وجودها وتطورها، كل ذلك يؤدي إلى تكوين تصور شامل ودقيق عن طبيعة نشوء هذا النظام العماري وأثره على أبنية المعابد وبالمقابل تأثير قدسية المعبد في توجيه نظام المحور الطولي وتطوره.
