هذا الكتاب ثمرة جهودنا نحن الخمسة، وكانت نقطة البداية مع مجموعة من الأفكار تضمها برنامج طرق الرؤية التلفزيوني.
حاولنا أن نوسع هذه الأفكار ونستفيض بها، لم تؤثر فقد بما قلناه، بل بالكيفية التي شرعنا بها محاولين قولها، وعليه فإن شكل الكتاب على إتصال كبير بغايتنا المتمثلة بأن يكون متضمناً الجدل الذي أحدثه.
يتألف الكتاب من سبع مقالات مرقمة، ويمكن قراءتها بأي ترتيب، أربع منها تستخدم الكلمات والصور، وثلاث تستخدم الصور فقط، لها أن تكون مقالات مصورة خالصة (في طرق رؤية المرأة وفي السمات المتناقضة لتقليد اللوحات الزيتية) تسعى لإثارة أكبر قدر من الأسئلة كما لو أنها مقالات شفاهية.
لا توجد في المقالات المصورة أحياناً أي معلومات ترافق الصور المعاد إنتاجها نجد أنها قد تشوش على النقاط المثارة، وفي كل الأحوال فإنه يمكن الإطلاع على هذه المعلومات في القائمة الخاصة بالأعمال المعاد إنتاجها المتواجدة في آخر الكتاب.
لا تدعي أي من المقالات إلا تعاملها مع السمات محدودة من الموضوع الذي تتناوله: خاصة تلك السمات التي أطلقها الوعي التاريخي الحديث؛ إن هدفنا الأساس كامن بإطلاق عملية من المساءلة.
