في هذا العمل يتحدث "برجر" عن الروابط الإنسانية التي يجمعها الحب ويفرقها السجن. ولا يبقى للأرواح المنفردة ما يؤانس وحدتها سوى الرسائل. في الرواية يجتمع الحب والمقاومة في زمان واحد ومكان واحد. إنهما صورتان، يجمعهما الأمل، والتذكر، وجمالية الاتصال وأوجاع الانفصال، فتغدو الكتابة "حواراً بين السجناء وآخرين يشبهون الأحرار، ذلك أن وجود السجن يحوّل ما خارجه إلى سجن آخر...". هي تجربة معيشة لمناضلة تعيش في مدينة سوز، ذات الأجواء المغبرة والمتداعية للسقوط، بينما يقبع كزافيه، صديقها المناضل، في السجن. رسائل عايدة إلى حبيبها، مشحونة بعزم وصمود وعاطفة جياشة وحنان مرهف. تسرد عليه الأحداث اليومية في المدينة، وتنقل له تفاصيل حياة مواطنيها بأطيافهم وتنوعهم عبر سيرتها ويومياتها هي. ولكن المدينة مهددة. قوى خارجية غاشمة ومجهولة تحاصرها وتنتهك حقوق مواطنيها. وهكذا تتحول أدق تفاصيل الحياة اليومية والمواقف الإنسانية إلى مصدر لصمود عايدة وتشبثها بالحياة، وطريق تلك القوى المدمرة. قالوا عن الرواية: "... تأمل برجر، وهو يكمل كل حكاية بأخرى، حرية الإنسان المصادرة، آخذاً بنثر مبتكر، يوسّع المعنى المباشر، ويضيء الصورة المرئية، بصورة محتجبة...". د. فيصل دراج "سجل قلق وملتزم ورائع للوعي الإنساني، وعرض مثير وبالغ المساحة وعميق، ويمكن قراءته، ليس كرواية فقط، بل كقصيدة ملحمية أو نص غنائي". ميليسا بين، جريدة الإندبندت "... رواية جاءت لتبرهن أنه مهما احتدت شراسة القوى التي نواجهها، فلا يمكنها أبداً النيل من الحبّ أو الروح الإنسانية". هارولد بنتر
