يعتبر مفهوم ما وراء المعرفة من المفاهيم التي ظهرت حديثاً في الكثير من الأدبيات والكثير من الدراسات أشارت إلى ظهور هذا المصطلح بوضوح في بداية السبعينات على يد العالم فلا فيل (Flavell) ليضيف بعداً جديداً في مجال علم النفس المعرفي، ومما دفع بعض التربويين للاهتمام بهذا المجال أنه في أحد زيارتهم لمدارس الأطفال وسؤالهم بعض الأسئلة، لم يستطع الطلاب الإجابة عنها مع أنها لم تكن تتطلب منهم أكثر من تسميع، عندهم لجأ فلافيل وزملاءه إلى استخدام مجموعة من الصور المتتابعة وتدريس مرحلتين دراستين مختلفين، بحيث كانت ألمجموعة الأولى أصغر من ألمجموعة الثانية بخمس سنوات، وقد لوحظ قدره المجموعة الأولى على التسميع وأداء المهمة بنجاح بنفس أداء المجموعة الثانية، وبذلك توصلوا إلى أن استخدام سعة الذاكرة بصوره أكثر فاعلية لا تتحقق إلا من خلال الوعي بالذات في معرفته مدى قدرات الذاكرة وكيفية واستخدام الاستراتيجيات القائمة على تلك المعرفة، وهي الاستراتيجيات التي تناولها المؤلفة في هذا الكتاب بالشرح والتفسير، وذلك من خلال الفصلين الأول: مفهوم الاستراتيجية، والثاني: عرض الواقع الحالي لمحتوى مناهج الآلات التربوية، بالإضافة إلى التدريبات على الضرب بالريشة على الأوتار المطلقة، وعددها خمسة وعشرون درساً وتدريباً في الفصل الثالث والأخير من الكتاب.
