هذه الرسالة هي عبارة عن إجازة بمرويات الشمني عن شيوخه، حيث استجازه أبو سعيد السلوي وابنه، وطلبا منه أن يكتب لهما إجازة عن مروياته، ما كان مجازاً أو مسموعاً، مع ذكر أسانيده فيها موصولة إلى مؤلفيها، مع إثبات ذلك بخطه، فأجابهما إلى ذلك راجياً الثواب.
وقد ذكر فيها مروياته في القراءات، والحديث (الصحاح، والسنن، والمسانيد، والأجزاء)، وعلوم الحديث، مع ذكر أسانيده لكل كتاب أو جزء فيها، ثم ذكر نص السماع والإجازة لهما.
وقد اهتم العلماء بهذا النوع من التأليف اهتماماً كثيراً، لما فيه من حفظ للعلم، وتوثيق له وضبط، فالإجازة إحدى طرق الرواية، وهناك ألفاظ تكاد جميعها تتفق وتتقارب في الغاية والمضمون، إذ أنها كلها تمثل طريقاً من طرق الرواية، وما يتعلق بها لدى المحدثين.
