عاش علي أحمد باكثير حياته مسافرًا في الزمان، مترحلًا بين العصور والحضارات، كما سافر في أعماق التاريخ والأساطير.
في سنة 1956م ترأس وفد الأدباء المصريين، وزار الاتحاد السوفيتي ورومانيا، وفي أكتوبر 1958 زار الاتحاد السوفيتي والنمسا ورومانيا... وكان الجزء الرسمي من الرحلة إلى موسكو والجمهوريات الإسلامية التابعة للاتحاد السوفيتي. وشارك في مؤتمر أدباء آسيا وأفريقيا في المقشند، ثم غادر المؤتمر منفردًا إلى النمسا ورومانيا...
كتب هذه اليوميات لنفسه كشيء من تزجيته للوقت وليس للنشر فلم يكتبها بلغته الأدبية العربية الرقيقة السهلة.
بدأت الرحلة الثانية في 11 من أكتوبر 1958 وزار جمهوريات: طاجستان بدعوة من الحكومة بعد أن شفي من وعكة برد.
تحدث باسم الأمة العربية.. سبعين مليون يومزاك، وقضى في "براغ" يومين في طريقه إلى النمسا حيث قام برحلة حول "فينا" وأحب بهاءها في النيل، وشاهد آثارًا للمصريين وأمجادًا.
كما زار إيطاليا، وزار بولونيا وأحس دوره كمسلم فاهم للدين دارسًا للعقيدة حافظًا للقرآن الكريم.
ثم بدأت رحلة العودة إلى مصر في 25 من نوفمبر 1958م.
مذكرات شخصية ينبغي أن يقرأها كل من يحب علي أحمد باكثير ذو الملامح الجادة الصارمة لم تمنعه من إبداع أدب هزلي كوميدي ساخر راقي.
