يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى توثيق القصور الأموية في البادية الأردنية كونها نادرة ومتميزة وحبى الله بها أرض المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية.
يطلق إسم قصور البادية على القصور والقلاع، والأبراج، والحمامات القديمة، والمحميات الزراعية، وخانات القوافل والمباني الحصينة التي تزخر بها البادية الممتدة بين الأردن وسورية والعراق، وقد شكلت هذه القصور معلماً مهماً في العمارة الإسلامية، حيث أنها تحوي المرافق الأساسية للحياة الصيفية الرغيدة بالإضافة إلى التحصينات التي تتمتع بها، إذ بُنيت على شكل قلاع وحصون منيعة بما يناسب طبيعة الحياة في البادية في تلك الفترة وبما يتناسب مع نمط الحياة، وأحياناً كان القصر يتوسط مجموعة من المباني المجتمعة ضمن حصن واحد.
تعكس القصور الصحراوية التي بناها الأمويون في بادية الأردن الشرقية حنينهم لأصولهم ونشأتهم في الجزيرة العربية، واهتم الأمويون بعمارة هذه القصور وزخرفتها وزودوها بالمنشآت المائية كالخزانات والبرك والأقنية والسدود لتعويض نقص المياه في مناطق البادية الجافة شحيحة الأمطار حتى فاقت قيمتها صفة الإستراحات التي أطلقت عليها وجعلوها في مرتبة القصور، وأدخل الأمويون إلى هذه القصور عناصر فريدة استقوها من حياة المدينة كالحمامات وقاعات الإستقبال ما حدا بعض الباحثين إلى إضفاء صفة رسمية على هذه المباني ونسبوا لها وظائف استقبال الوفود والإجتماع إلى زعماء القبائل المتنفذة فيما ذهب آخرون إلى اعتبارها إستراحات على طرق القوافل ومهما كانت أسباب بناء القصور في البادية الأردنية فإنها تمثل إضافة نوعية وكنوزاً ثقافية ستصدر ضمن سلسلة إكتشافات البادية الأردنية ويقدم هذا الكتاب لمحة شاملة عن تلك القصور وأهميتها.
