بين الألفة والمأزق فرق كبير، فكيف كانت "الألفة" بين اللبنانيين قديماً، ولماذا تحولت إلى مأزق حديثاً؟ في كتابه "الألفة... خيار لبناني" يستحضر رجل الأعمال اللبناني وليم حبيب بردويل - كما يقول - "نوعاً من السلوك كنّا نسميه بالعربية "الألفة" من دون أن ندرك فعلاً معنى الكلمة وفحواها، فهي تقوم أساساً على تجاوز الفوارق الدينية، والتعاطي مع الناس كأشخاص أولاً وآخراً...".
وعبر صفحات هذا الكتاب يعود المؤلف بذاكرته إلى الوراء ويصف كيف كان المجتمع في بلاده يتمتع بإنفتاح وتصرف عقلاني كبير تجاه الآخرين على أمل خلق لبنان جديد، خاصة بعد نيل الإستقلال، ولكن شرارة الحرب الأهلية التي أصابت شظاياها الجميع، فجّرت وضعاً جديداً "فبدأت جرائم القتل على الهوية، والتي أدت إلى مقتل وتشويه 200.000 شخصاً أو 12% من عدد سكاننا من دون معرفة السبب...".
وهكذا يستمر المؤلف إلى أن يصل إلى المشهد اللبناني للعام (2016) وعملية الإنتخابات (31 اكتوبر 2016) المتعلقة برئاسة الجمهورية ويقدم رأيه كمواطن لبناني فيها...
أما عن الألفة التي كانت والتي أهملها اللبنانيون اليوم فهي برأيه "فقط مسموح ممارسة "الألفة" على المستوى الشخصي وليس عبر الأحزاب السياسية أو الطوائف الدينية، بل من خلال حرية الإختيار اليومية في أعمال الفرد وسلوكه... ويتساءل أخيراً "لماذا ترك الأمر هكذا؟".
وفي الكتاب أيضاً يوضح المؤلف رأيه في الوضع السياسي في لبنان والطوائف الدينية والأحزاب السياسية، كما يخصص جزءاً من الكتاب لــ "تحليل للبناء العملاني لشركة بردويل وشركائهم" ونشاطه التجاري في الخارج والداخل أثناء الحرب اللبنانية وحتى الوضع الراهن، ويختتم كتابه بدعوة إلى الوحدة الوطنية...".
