تمثّل الدراسات المجموعة في هذا الكتاب مناقشات نقدية لمقاربات مهمّة داخل النظرية السوسيولوجية الحديثة، هدفها المشترك ذو طابع تمهيدي في المقام الأول: يتعلق الأمر بدراسات تاريخية - نظرية، غالباً على شكل بورتريه للمفكّر، حاول هونيت فيها الظفر بنظر عامة على الصعوبات السوسيولوجية - الفلسفية، التي يواجهها اليوم منهجيّاً أي مشروع لنظرية إجتماعية نقدية.
فوجد أنه ينبغي أن تنتج وجهة نظر جديدة وموضحة، تتضمّن في مسار النقاش عناصر تقليدية من الفلسفة الإجتماعية الفرنسية بشكل خاص، غير أن الدراسات المجموعة هنا لا تهدف إلى أكثر من مساهمة غير مباشرة، تلقي الضوء على المشكلات المتعلقة بحالة النظرية الإجتماعية النقدية أكثر مما تبحث عن أجوبة.
وتتشكل نقطة الإنطلاق للدراسات التاريخية - النظرية من الإستعادة النظرية للتقاليد الرومانسية المناهضة للرأسمالية، تلك التقاليد التي اتخذ منها القرن العشرون منطلقاً لمشروع نظرية نقدية للمجتمع.
ولما كان جورج لوكاتش قد شخّص بدقّة في مؤلفاته الأولى تحت العنوان الرومانسي الرئيس "التمزق" ظواهر التغريب والصراعات الإجتماعية، فقد استندت مختلف مقاربات النظرية النقدية للمجتمع منذ ذلك الحين إلى تلك الظواهر.
لذا، فإن كل خبرة من خبرات التمزق هذه تحتل مركز إحدى المقاربات النظرية التي عولجت في هذا الكتاب.
