تعد كتابة البحوث لا سيما في تاريخ العرب قبل الإسلام، اللبنة الأولى التي تؤصل لربط الحاضر بالماضي، وترفع بنيان المجد والحضارة العربية شامخة بين حضارات العالم، ولا يتأنى ذلك إلاّ بالإطلاع التّام عن تاريخ أجدادنا وآبائنا.
فكان موضوع الكتاب هو "عبادة الأصنام والأوثان والأنصاب عند العرب في الجزيرة"، والذي دعا المؤلف لإختيار هذا الموضوع أمور عدّة منها، أنّ الشِّرك موضوعٌ طارئٌ على العرب، ولم يكونوا قبل عبادة الأصنام إلاّ أصحاب رسالة عظيمة، بدأها إبراهيم عليه حين يزرع الوحيد في قلب جزيرتهم، ورفع لوائها منى بعده ابنه إسماعيل عليه السلام، فما السبب الذي جعل العرب يتركون ذلك إلى غيره، ويعبدون حجارة لا تضُّر - ولا تنفع، ثم كيف انتقلت إليهم هذه الفكرة وتطوَّرت ونشأت وترعرعت حتى تركت بصمتها في كل بيت ومكان في جزيرتهم، فكان ذلك السبب في إختيار المؤلف لهذا الموضوع.
مفهوم العبادة، والأصنام، والأوثان، والأنصاب، والفرق بينها، والألفاظ ذات الصلة بها، كما تناولت في المبحث الثاني تطور الفكر الديني وجذور عبادة الأصنام، ومسمياتها وأشكالها عند العرب في الجزيرة. وقصرت بحثي فيما كان منها داخل جزيرة العرب دون غيرها، فلم أتطرق لما كان منها في خارج الجزيرة إلّا بالقدر الذي تحتاجه الدراسة، أما المبحث الثالث فقد كرَّسته لدراسة معتقدات وطقوس العرب الدينية في الأصنام، وقد أودعت الخاتمة خلاصة البحث والنتائج التي خرجت بها.
