يبحث هذا الكتاب في جواز أو عدم جواز الشهادة الثالثة في الأذان و الإقامة والتشهد في الصلاة، وبكلام آخر "إن أصل الصلاة وأحكامها مثل الأذان والإقامة قد شُرّع في أحد معارج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، ولكن وقت إبلاغ هذا الحكم (الشهادة الثالثة) قد أوكل إلى زمان واقعة غدير خمّ لعموم المسلمين، كما جاء ذلك في بحار الأنوار ...". والمقصود بها ما ورد عن الإمام علي رضي الله عنه "وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله، وأن محمداً رسول الله، وأن علياً وصي رسول الله، وبمحمد عليهما السلام يختم الله النبوة وبي يتمّ الوصية، وأنا أمير المؤمنين". لذلك يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب الشيخ الكاشاني "أن كل من يعتقد ويقرّ بأصل الولاية يكون مكلفاً بالإقرار والإعتراف بالشهادة الثالثة ولا يتركها لا في الأذان ولا في الإقامة؛ لأن الشهادة بالولاية للأمير عليه السلام هي فرع قبل أصل الولاية". وفي متن هذا الكتاب يورد المؤلف روايات الأئمة بخصوص وجوب الشهادة الثالثة، وآراء الفقهاء وفتاواهم في هذه الشهادة وهم أربعة اقسام، القسم الأول: المانعون: وهم القائلون بحرمة الشهادة الثالثة في الأذان أو الإقامة أو كليهما، خصوصاً في تشهد الصلاة ...). والقسم الثاني: المجوّزون: وهم أكثر فقهاء الشيعة القائلون بجواز الشهادة الثالثة في الأذان والإقامة متفقون على أصل جوازها ويفتون بها. والقسم الثالث: القائلون بالتفصيل: وهم الذين لا يجوّزون الشهادة الثالثة في الأذان، ولكن يقولون بجوازها في الإقامة ... والقسم الرابع: المتوقفون في حكمها: وهم الذين اعتبروا أن الشهادة الثالثة هي من أحكام الدين، لا من الفروع الفقهية ...". ويعزو المؤلف توقف هؤلاء عن الحكم يعود إلى التقيّة فيه، أو من باب الإحتياط فيه، ولذلك يبيّن للقارىء بشيء من التفصيل "الجواز وعدم الجواز وأدلّة المفصلين والمتوقفين، وبيان نقد أدلة القائلين بالجواز والقائلين بالمنع" وذلك أن يورد ثلة من أقوال الفقهاء بشأن حكم الشهادة الثالثة.
