لقد حظيت السيّرة النبويّة بقبول لا نظير له في نفوس سامعيها، ولقيت إستجابة طوعيَّة للخير في قلوب مرتاديها، فرغب جمّ غفير في حفظ هذه السيرة المباركة، والإعتناء بها، وتنوعت طرقهم في ذلك، وكثرت تصانيفهم، والمتأمِّل في السيرة النبوية ومصادرها، يلاحظ جملة أطوار تدرّج فيها التصنيف في فنّ السيّرة ويمكن تلخيصها فيما يلي: المشاهدة والملاحظة والحفظ في الصدور، وهذا تمثّل في عصر الصحابة وصغارهم، ثم كبار التابعين، طور التدوين، ونقل ما في الصدور إلى السطور، وكان همهم جمع كل ما له علاقة بالمصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم، ومن أبرز الذين اشتهروا بذلك: أبان بن عثمان بن عفان، طور فك تلك الكتب، والتوسع فيها فأخذوا في شرح أعمالهم والزيادة عليها، وربما التخصّص في بعض أجزاء السيرة كالشمائل، والمغازي وغيرهما، طور التفنّن في ذلك بالنظم، وكان من أولئك: الإمام الحافظ زين الدين عبد الرحيم بن الحسين بن العراقي (ت 806هـ)، الذي نظم السيّرة النبوية في ألف بيت إبتداءً من نسبه الزّكيّ إلى وفاته ودفنه صلى الله عليه وسلم، وقد حظيت هذه الألفيّة المباركة بإعتناء أهل العلم حفظاً وشرحاً.
ومن الشُرَّاح المناوي فشرحها في هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا، وكان في غاية الوجازة، ونهاية الإختصار، ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى الأستاذ "عمر أحمد" بتحقيقه والتعليق عليه وتخريج أحاديثه ليكون عوناً للقارئ المهتم.
