تغيرت قصصه بعد أن لبس خاتم الخطوبة، وصار يظهره لكل زبون قبل أن يبدأ الحكاية ويقول: وهل تعتقد أن أبا الزولف الذي غاص في بحر الحياة يمكنه أن ينخدع ويخطب لولا أنه اقتنع بأن المرأة هي أكثر مخلوق يمكنه أن يسعد الرجل ويلتصق به وينوّر حياته، لكن أحد الزبائن اعترض قائلاً: لا نستطيع أن نأخذ كلامك على محمل الثقة، أنت الآن عاشق، تخضع لتأثير قوة القلب... الحب أعمى يا أبا الزولف، لكن أبا الزولف يرد عليه بحكاية صغيرة، "لما مات جدي بعد ثمانين سنة، خاض نصفها متزوجاً جدتي التي أذاقها ألوان العذاب، ماذا فعلت جدتي؟... هل تعرف... كل يوم صباحاً تفتح الخزانة وترتب ثيابه، وتشمها، وتعطرها بدمعها... المرأة أكثر الكائنات وفاء، وهنا انبرى أحد الزبائن المنتظرين دورهم، كفاك مدحاً بمخلوق يكاد يجنني... ضحك أبو الزولف...
