وهكذا تجنب درويش (الفضاءات الثَّقافية الشَّعبوية) ليتفادى بعض الاحتكاكات مع المثقَّفين الذين لم يقبلوا برعاية الدولة لـ(موهبته)، لكنه، في المطلق، لم يحرم نفسه من بناء صداقات مع بعض وجوه الحركة الطلَّابية والشباب المبدعين الذين كانوا بمثل عُمُره، إلا أنَّه تعرَّض كذلك لبعض ردود الأفعال التي تكشف عن توتُّرات تلك السنوات، فقد كان نجيب سرور يهتف كلَّما رآه «إحنا كمان شعراء الأرض المحتلَّة، عايزين نسكن في شبرد». كما راجت أُغنيةٌ للثّنائي الشّهير أحمد فؤاد نجم، والشيخ إمام، في أوساط المثقَّفين، يزعم البعض أنها كانت تسخر من محمود درويش مباشرة، ومن الإمعان في تدليله.
