يتناول هذا الكتاب التحولات الديموغرافية التي شهدتها سورية طوال ثمانية وخمسين عاماً (من 1947 إلى 2005)، ويرصد التغيرات الإجتماعية التي رافقتها.
ولاحظت الكاتبة أن سورية عرفت في عقدي الخمسينيات والستينيات من القرن العشرين نمواً سريعاً للسكان، ثم أعقب هذا النمو تباطؤ تدريجي، إلى أن استقر على معدلات خصوبة أقل في منتصف التسعينيات؛ وهذه الدراسة ليست عرضاً للبيانات الإحصائية عن الزواج والخصوبة والوفيات، بل قراءة سوسيولوجية في البيانات الإحصائية.
يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تحليل الخصوبة في سورية وتحليل ظاهرة زيادة السكان مع عدم إرتفاع معدلات الخصوبة، فسورية التي ارتفع عدد سكانها من ثلاثة ملايين غداة الإستقلال في سنة 1946، إلى نحو 20 مليوناً في سنة 2004، لم تشهد، في الفترة نفسها، إرتفاعاً في معدلات الخصوبة، بل إنخفاضاً، جراء إنتشار وسائل منع الحمل والإجهاض المتعمد وتعليم المرأة وتحولها إلى العمل المنتج، الأمر الذي يشير إلى تغير جوهري في المنظومة القيمية للمجتمع السوري.
