لا تزال أمراض القلب والشرايين تشكل السبب الأول للوفيات في العالم، خصوصاً في الدول المتقدمة، وهي المسؤولة عن 40% تقريباً من إجمالي الوفيات في هذه الدول.
هذه الأمراض تزداد بشكل مستمر في الدول المتقدمة وأيضاً في الدول النامية، حيث يعيش مئات الملايين من السكان في حالة توترٍ دائم نتيجة أوضاع إجتماعية، إقتصادية ونفسّية ضاغطة، وإستغراق في أنماط حياتية وعادات غذائية مؤذية جداً لصحتهم بشكل عام ولصحة قلوبهم وشرايينهم بشكل خاص.
وهذا ما ينطبق على واقعنا في لبنان، حيث كثر الحديث في السنوات الأخيرة عن هذه الأمراض الرائجة جداً، بحيث أننا أصبحنا نسمع كل يوم تقريباً عن حالة وفاة فجائية بسبب ذبحة قلبية حادة أصابت من دون سابق إنذار أحد أهلنا الأعزاء أو من صديق هنا أو هناك خضع لعملية تمييل لشرايين القلب أو لعملية توسيع لأحد شرايين قلبه التاجية أو لعملية قلب مفتوح من أجل إعادة تغذية عضلة القلب بشكل طبيعي.
