عندما ترتفع دعوات الإصلاح بشكل حاد في مجتمع ما فإن ذلك يعني أن النظام السائد في هذا المجتمع قد وصل غلي درجة كبيرة من العجز عن أداء وظائفه الأساسية، ولم يعد قادراً علي حل التناقضات الداخلية والتحديات الخارجية التي تواجهه.
من مظاهر هذا العجز وكعلامة من علامات الأفول أن يفقد الخطاب المعبر عن النظام كل مصداقيته وقدرته علي التأثير حتي بين الشرائح الاجتماعية التي ترتبط مصالحها بسيادة هذا الخطاب واستمرارية الأوضاع القائمة، لكن عندما يصبح تفشي الفساد وشيوع الخلل في الأداء السمة المميزة علي مستوي المجتمع بأسره، هنا يصبح وجود واستمرارية المجتمع ذاته في خطر.
في مثل هذه الظروف بين صفوفها مفكرون ومثقفون كبار، تظهر شخصيات تصف الداء وتشير إلي الدواء، وفي مثل هذه الظروف لا يفيد ضجيج البيروقراط وحذاقة التكنوقراط ولا انتهازية المثقفوقراط، في مثل هذه الظروف يستحيل تحقيق أي حل للتناقضات، ولا يمكن مواجهة التحديات بمجرد إجراء تعديلات شكلية هنا أو هناك، عندئذ لابد من تغييرات بنيوية جذرية، ولابد من تغيير آليات أداء النظام الاجتماعي السياسي جذرياً حفاظاً علي بقاء واستمرارية المجتمع ذاته.
تنبثق المجتمعات الجديدة، وتولد من قلب المجتمعات القديمة عبر عمليات الإصلاح والتغيير المستمرة و عبر حلها للتنقاضات ونجاها في مواجهة التحديات، لكن عندما تعجز عن تحقيق ذلك تتعرض منظومة القيم الأساسية التي تشكل دعائم وجود وتماسك المجتمع ذاته لخطر التفكك والانهيار الذي يؤدي في النهاية إلي فقدان المجتمع للعناصر الأساسية المكونة لهويته.
لقد واجهت المجتمعات الأوروبية هذه التناقضات والتحديات في فترة عصر التنوير، تواجه المجتمعات العربية هذا الخطر حالياً، وأحد الأسباب وراء ترجمة الكتاب هو محاولة فهم هذه الإشكالية من خلال تحليل مؤسسي علم اجتماع الاديان لموضوع الدين ومكانته في المجتمعات الحديثة.
