إن الصفة الأخرى لليانوس الهندوكي هي وجود التعصب والتسامح جنباً إلى جنب. ولأن الهنادكة في التاريخ كانوا قوماً بارعين وناجحين في استنباط الوسائل بحثاُ عن الحماية الفكرية ضد الحقائق البغيضة، هناك تعارض غير سليم بين ما هو موجود فعلاً وما هو مطروح قولاً.
بما أن الديانة الهندوكية فلسفية وتأملية في طبيعتها تعتبر بصرحها المتقن القائم على كثرة الآلهة الكبيرة والصغيرة كلاً لا يمكن تجزئته، ومن الصعوبة بمكان تعريفها بعبارة موجزة ومتقنة، لأنها تتضمن طريقة في الحياة، بدلاً من عقيدة محدودة ومتعلقة بالمعبد، وهي تؤثر في وضع الفرد الإجتماعي، وفي زواجه وحتى في الطعام الذي يتناوله، والأصدقاء الذين يختلط بهم وكذلك المهنة التي يقوم بها، لا يمكن اعتبار أية شريعة صحيحة أو اية عقيدة منفصلة عن الديانة الهندوكية إذ تتراوح معتقداتها من التوحيد العميق إلى عبادة إله بدائي، ومن المذهب العقلاني إلى المعتقدات الأسطورية الشائعة والتافهة. على أية حال إن الشئ الذي يضفي التماسك والاستقرار والاستمرارية على المجتمع الهندوكي هو نظام الطبقات المنغلقة الذي يعتبر حجر الزاوية في معتقدات الهنادكة، وتركيبهم الاجتماعي وطريقة معاشهم.
