"إذا حوّلنا النظر إلى شعر الحداثة، لنلقي الضوء على هذه العلاقة بين الرّمز والثّقافة، فإنّنا نجد جُلَّ القصائد الحديثة تولي أهمّية بارزة للرمز، وهذا يُشير إلى رغبة الشعراء تجاوز الأدوات التعبيريّة التقليديّة إلى أدوات تعبيريّة حداثيّة في مقدّمتها الرمز، لتنهض بعبء التجربة، وتؤسّس لقيمٍ شعريّةٍ جديدة، تكون بدورها علامات ثقافيّة قادرة على تغيير الواقع وإعادة تشكيله وفاق رؤية الشّاعر. وإنّ الحديث عن الرمز عند شعراء الحداثة، يفرض علينا تسمية ثلاثة منهم، هم: محمود درويش، ومحمد علي شمس الدين، وكمال خير بك. ولأنّ العالَم كان عالمًا متحوّلًا عند هؤلاء الشعراء من حالٍ إلى حالٍ، تحوّلت أدواتهم التّعبيريّة، وفي مقدّمتها الرمز، وذلك تبعًا للمجرى العميق الذي اتخذته حركة التأريخ لنفسها. وهم قد لجؤوا إلى الرّمز في سياق نصّهم الشعريّ قصد إنتاج الدلالة الشعريّة التي تعبّر عن رؤيتهم والتي تتجاوز ما تعيه ثقافة عصرهم، فتلتقط، بوساطة الرمز، المشارب التي اتخذها التاريخ منفذًا له نحو المستقبل. وفي هذا الإطار تبرز أسئلة عديدة، هي: هل استطاع كلٌّ هؤلاء الشعراء، بوساطة أدواتهم التّعبيريّة (الرمز)، وما يحملون من مكوّن ثقافيّ، الإمساك بالمراحل والتحوّلات التأريخيّة والسياسيّة التي واجهتهم وعاشوها بقوّتها وضعفها، بتفاؤلها وتشاؤمها؟ وكيف تحوّلت أداتهم التّعبيريّة (الرمز) في قراءة ما رأوه؟ وهل كان هذا التحوّل مسايرًا لحركة الأحداث التأريخيّة واتجاهاتها بما تمثّل من ثقافات سائدة كانت تقوم بعبء المرحلة، أو مختلفًا بالرؤية والاستشراف للمرحلة التي تقودها تلك الثّقافة؟ إنّ الإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة ستكون مدار البحث في نصوص هؤلاء الشعراء، وتشكّل قراءة لرصد الرموز موضوع الدراسة عندهم، والإشارة من خلال ذلك إلى قدرتهم الاستشرافيّة الكامنة في ثقافتهم القادرة على الكشف عن إشارات الهزائم وإشارات الانتصار التي تشهدها الأمّة، الطارحة على الثقافة السائدة أسئلة حرجة لم تستطع الإجابة عنها تلك الثقافة. "
