يرصد لحقبة تاريخية فاصلة من تاريخ مصر تمتد ما بين القرن الرابع والقرن السابع الميلادي، والتي شهدت تحولاً كبيراً في مجرى التاريخ من العصر الروماني إلى العصر البيزنطي، أفرز تفاعلاً بين التراث الروماني والتراث اليوناني والحضارات الشرقية القديمة والمسيحية، وقد عالجت الدراسة الفكر المصري خلال تلك الفترة التاريخية في اتجاهاته كلها، الاتجاه الوثني بشقيه المادي والفلسفي، ثم الاتجاه المسيحي في شكله الجديد، والذي أطلق عليه، المسيحية المفلسفة، ثم الاتجاه التأملي المتثل في الرهبانية، ويؤكد المؤلف أن تلك الاتجاهات والجوانب فاقت فيها مصر زمانها ومعاصريها، الأمر الذي أهل هذا الفكر المصري إلى الامتداد إلى إفريقيا، وساهم في احتلال مصر مكانة عظمى في شئون البلاط البيزنطي.
