بعد انتهاء الحرب العربية الإسرائيلية الرابعة/أكتوبر/تشرين الأول 1973 أمرت دائرة الأركان العراقية كافة التشكيلات والوحدات العراقية التي شاركت في تلك الحرب بإعداد تقارير مفصلة عن مساهمتها في تلك الحرب على أن تتضمن تلك التقارير جميع ما لدى تلك التشكيلات والوحدات من معلومات عن تلك الحرب ومن أية نوعيات كانت، على أن ترسل مباشرة الى المراجع العليا دون المرور بالقدمات الوسطية للقيادة أو ما يعرف في الجيش العراقي بـ "سلسلة المراجع" والعقيد الركن المتقاعد سليم شاكر الأمامي كان واحدا ممن شاركوا في الحرب العربية الإسرائيلية.
ولهذا كان لازما عليه أن يدون تقريرا كاملا عن تلك الحرب، هذا على المستوى الرسمي، أما على المستوى الشخصي فقد عنى المؤلف بتدوين تجربته الشخصية في هذه الحرب مركزا على الدور الذي لعبه الجيش العراقي في الحرب العربية الإسرائيلية الرابعة، وبالذات ركز على دور اللواء المدرع الثاني عشر (العراقي) في تلك الحرب، حيث كان للكاتب شرف قيادة اللواء المدرع الثاني عشر ودور الجيش الواقي في صد الهجوم الإسرائيلي على دمشق. وما يحتويه هذا الكتاب "الجيش العراقي وحرب تشرين /1973" هو تفاصيل ما حدث في تلك الحرب مع اللواء المدرع الثاني عشر، والذي خاض قتاله الضاري ضد أربعة ألوية مدرعة إسرائيلية يقودها الجنرال "دان لانر
