يعتبر التميز الإداري سمة من سمات قادة المنظمات ولذلك فإن الإنسان لا يألو جهداً في أن يحقق التميز في جميع نواحي الحياة وفي كافة المجالات ولولا ذلك لما رأينا تلك الإنجازات والاكتشافات والاختراعات العظيمة التي تعمل على تميز منظماتنا وشركاتنا، إن البحث عن التميز في مجال العمل يعتبر من المفاهيم الحديثة التي تحقق التفوق، لذلك لابد أن تلجأ الشركات الحديثة إلى الطرق الحديثة وتتجنب الطرق التقليدية والقديمة بل وتنحيها جانباً وتعمل على الانضمام إلى عالم جديد من المؤسسات الناجحة عن طريق تنمية مهارات التميز ومباشرة العمل وتحسين الأداء، كانت الصناعة الغربية تعاني في بداية مرحلة التفوق الياباني من أسوأ حالات انعدام الثقة بالذات وكانت الرسالة المطلوب توجيهها للغرب آنذاك هي؛ (بإمكانك أنت أيضاً أن تكون عظيماً) وقد لاقت الرسالة قبولاً كبيراً في الأوساط الغربية، وفي الحقيقة كان الفاصل بين التبسيط والمعنى السطحي للموضوع ليس سوى خط رفيع جداً لا يتمكن البعض من رؤيته والوقوف عند هذا الحد الفاصل، غير أن الأفكار الجديدة التي عمدت أن تتبناها المؤسسات الناجحة تتجنب السطحية والتعقيد في الموضوع، ولقد أدى الإفراط في التركيز على أبحاث العمليات وأنظمة التخطيط الدقيقة والتحليل المالي في بعض الشركات إلى تفريغ مفهوم الإداة من محتواه وتحويل بؤرة الاهتمام بعيداً عن العميل، ولذلك وجد أن من الضروري تذكير المدراء بأن النجاح وتحقيق التميز ينبعان من الأداء المتميز والاتفاق على القيام بالأعمال المعتادة بطرق غير معتادة.
