"ألان مورهيد"- مؤلف هذا الكتاب- وإن حرص على التزام حيدة المؤرخ، أو تظاهر بالحرص لم يمالك أن يظهر بين آن وآخر، شيئاً مما عهدناه من العقلية الاستعمارية... فهو يصور العرب والإسلام فى أفريقيا بصورة يبدو خلالها الحقد، ويحاول أن يلصق بهما كل نوائب التأخر الذى ران على أفريقيا زمناً... ثم يحاول فى عرضه لنهضات أفريقيا التحررية، أن يصور الكفاح من أجل الحرية والكرامة بصورة حرب دينية بين الإسلام والمسيحية.
ولكن هذه اللمحات من التحامل، أو الانسياق وراء تغرير المراجع، لا تذهب بقيمة الكتاب كمصدر يعرف بأهم رافد من روافد نيلنا العظيم، وبحقبة من تاريخ قرتنا، كان لبلادنا فيها دور ليس بالهين.
لذلك عمدت إلى النقل الأمين ما استطع، مع إضافة بعض "الهوامش" فى ذيل بعض الصفحات، تعليقاً فى المواضع التى لم أكن أملك السكوت عنها.
