النيل هو أعظم أنهار الدنيا، ويبلغ طوله 6695 كيلو متراً، ومنذ ما قبل التاريخ شغل هذا النهر الفاتحين والرحالة والمستكشفين من كل الأجناس. وخلال القرنين الماضيين نشطت البعثات الاستكشافية الغربية في اتجاهه. وحتى قيام بعثة الربان سليم قبطان، كان النيل الأبيض ما يزال غير مستكشف، وبالتالي فإن ينابيع النيل ما برحت موضوع تطلع الشعوب كلها. من هنا تأخذ هذه الرحلة أهميتها كرحلة علمية رائدة بنى على ما جاء فيها من ملاحظات ومعلومات وما خلصت إليه من معطيات، جل الرحالة والمستكشفين الأجانب الذين حاولوا لاحقاً الوصول إلى منابع النيل. انطلقن الرحلة من الخرطوم سنة 1839، بأمر من محمد علي باشا الكبير واستغرقت 135 يوماً، وانتظم فيها علماء عرب وأجانب وتألفت من 400 شخص بقيادة ضابط مصري، ولعل في استعادة هذا النص إلى المكتبة الجغرافية العربية شيئاً من الاعتراف بقيمة الأثر الذي تركه المشروع التحديثي لمحمد علي، الذي تطلع إلى وضع أسس النهضة والتقدم في الوطن العربي، والذي سبق بمأثرته الرائدة المشروع التحديثي الياباني بسنوات.
