هذا الكتاب مقاربة اجتماعية وثقافية لفكرة الجنوب الجمالية. أعني بالجنوب ما كان يُسمى قضاء الظفير ويُسمى الآن إداريا منطقة الباحة. وهو مكان يقع بين خطي طول ( 41- 42 ) شرق خط غرينتش من جهة، وبين دائرتي عرض( 20 -21) شمال خط الاستواء من جهة أخرى.
أما فكرة الجنوب فأعني بها الفكرة الجماعية التي تحدد هُوية الجنوبيين الجمالية الذين يسكنون هذه المنطقة، وهي هُوية تفرق بينهم وبيْن الآخرين من غير الجنوبيين. وأعني بفكرة الجنوب الفنية تجربة الجنوب الفنية كما تتمثل في أداءاته الفنية وهي: العرضة واللعب والمسحباني.
