ينطلق الكتاب من دراسة الافتراضات الخفية في النظرية العامة الحديثة، فيتناول التجربة والنظريات الاجتماعية التي انبثقت عن أستراليا والشعوب الأصلية وأميركا اللاتينية والهند وأفريقيا والإسلام وغيرها من مجتمعات ما بعد الاستعمار، بصفتها مصادرَ لمساهمات مهمة وحيوية في العلوم الاجتماعية العالمية. وهي نظريات تتسم - بحسب المؤلفة - بالقدرة على تحوير نفوذ الهيمنة المتروبولية والنيوليبرالية على الفكر الاجتماعي من خلال الاحترام المتبادل والتفاعل؛ على الرغم من أن المتروبول غالبًا ما يهمّش مساهماتها ويشكّك في صدقيتها الفكرية.
يرى الكتاب أن ثمة نظرية اجتماعية تنتجها مجتمعات الأطراف، تتساوى في الصرامة الفكرية وتلك الصادرة عن المتروبول، وهي غالبًا ما تكون أكثر ارتباطًا بعالمنا المتغيّر من الناحية السياسية، حيث تعتمد الأنثروبولوجيا والتاريخ وعلم النفس والفلسفة والاقتصاد والدراسات الثقافية، ولها تداعيات واسعة النطاق على العلوم الاجتماعية في القرن الحادي والعشرين.
