ولما كان هذا الكتاب يحتل مكانة عظيمة بين الكتب المصنفة في بابه فقد اهتم "محمود بيجو" بتحقيقه وبإخراجه في طبعة جديدة، وبالتقديم له بمقدمة بين فيها العلاقة الوثيقة بين "المنقذ من الضلال" والمنهج لديكارت ثم دعم آراءه بالوثائق وأرقام المخطوطات التي كانت موجود عند ديكارت، وما كان موجوداً عند أصدقائه المقربين، والتي ما زالت موجودة في مكتبات أوروبا إلى يومنا هذا.
يصور هذا الكتاب العقل البشري وهو يسعى في سبيل البحث عن الحقيقة. فالغزالين حجة الإسلام، الذي اعترته أزمة شك عنيفة، نظر على ضوء العقل، في المذاهب الرائجة في زمانه وهي أربعة: علم الكلام، والفلسفة، والباطنية، والصوفية، فوجد الحق في مذهب المتصوفة وانخراط في طريقتهم، لأنه "علم يقيناً أن المتصوفة هم السالكون لطريق الله تعالى، خاصة وأن سيرتهم أحسن السير، وطريقهم أصوب الطرق، وأخلاقهم أزكى الأخلاق".
