يشكل هذا الكتاب مدخلاً لفهم الوعي الغربي في مساراته المتعددة، فهو عندما أخذ "ميشال فوكو" كمادة انشغال اساسية، كان يعمل على إعادة تثمير الشخصية للكشف عن مسيرة نصف قرن من الحضارة الغربية، بدأت مع نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية، والتساؤلات الحادة التي افرزتها عن سبب العنف الذي أودى بحياة ملايين من البشر على الرغم من النبرة العقلانية التي كثيراً ما تحدثت عنها هذه القارة العجوز.
وقد رافقت هذه الشخصية الأحداث الكبرى في التاريخ المعاصر، من الإنتفاضات الطلابية عام 1968، إلى الثورة الإسلامية في إيران، فساهمت في بعضها وتكلمت عنها، وتركت بصماتها الخاصة التي من الممكن العودة إليها، لرؤية كيفية تفاعل المثقف مع الأحداث. لذلك من الممكن أن نعتبر هذه الشخصية علامة مميّزة في مسيرة الفكر الغربي، تلاقت عندها التيارات الفكرية المتنوعة من وجودية وماركسية وبنيوية، وعلى الرغم من ذلك أخذت لنفسها مساراً ميّزها عن غيرها، فكانت هي الحدث، ليس في زمنها الخاص الذي عاشت فيه، إنما في زمن القول الفلسفي الذي يستمر باستمرار فعالية القول.
وهذا الكتاب عن "ميشال فوكو" يشكل استعادة لفكره، ولكنها استعادة لم تكتف بعرض الأفكار بطريقة مدرسية، بل عملت على القيام بقراءة متجددة للفكر "الفوكوي"، حاولت أن تُظهر كيفية معالجته لأزمة الفكر الغربي، لا سيما الجانب المنهجي منه، الذي وصل في نهاية الأمر إلى أفق مسدود، دفعه للكلام عن موت الإنسان.
من هذا كله تتأتى أهمية هذا الكتاب، فهو يقدم قراءة تنطلق من انشغالات ذات طبيعة ذاتية، فتتحدث عنها كآخر ولكنها في تلك اللحظة تتحدث عن "الأنا" بكل تفصيلاتها وهواجسها. بالتالي هذا الكتاب قراءة بالذات في الذات، حتى لو أخذت شكلاً وصورة مختلفة عنها.
