إن كتاب "منازل السائرين" للعارف بالله شيخ الإسلام أبي إسماعيل الهروي الأنصاري، من أوائل الكتب التي رسمت دستور السلوك رسماً منهجياً. فكان أهم وأشهر متون التصوف إلى ظهور حكم الإمام ابن عطاء الله السكندري أواخر القرن السابع أو أوائل الثامن. وقد تميز "منازل السائرين" بإحكام فائق في منهجه وعبارته كليهما، فوضع مؤلفه كل كلمة في موضعها على سبيل الإيجاز مع تمام الدلالة، هذا مع كثرة منازله التي تبلغ المائة، لكل منها اصطلاحه وتفاصيله. هذا فضلاً عن تصدير العارف الهروي كل باب من أبوابه بآية من القرآن الكريم تعطي معنى الباب إما عبارة أو إشارة. فصار الكتاب في إحكامه ووجازته وكثرة معانيه ثم إشاراته القرآنية ميداناً فسيحاً تجول فيه النفوس العلوية مستجلية مراقي سيرها، ومدونة رحلتها العلوية في مدارج اليقين تأسيساً على هذا المتن المتين.
وظل الكتاب بهذا الوصف قمة شاهقة بالنظر ترام، ويعجز عن دركه العصبة العظام. حتى قيض الله لشرحه وبسطه نفر قليل من أساطين العرفان لا سيما سيدي عفيف الدين التلمساني ومولانا كمال الدين القاشاني. فكان لسان حالهما رضي الله عنهما: (ومارميت إذ رميت ولكن الله رمى)، فالحمد الله الذي قيض لهذا الكتاب من صفوة العارفين من قام بشرحه وبيانه.
ثم جاء الإمام عبد الرءوف المناوي في أوائل القرن الحادي عشر الهجري فنظر في الشروح واستخلص منها شرحه الخاص الذي يقرب عبارة الشروح- لا سيما شرح مولانا العفيف التلمساني- لقارئها، ويزيدها بياناً، من كيسه تارة أو من شرح العارف بالله سديد الدين اللخمي شيخ الإمام القرطبي المفسر تارة أخرى. فكان عمل الإمام المناوي جديراً بالاهتمام والتحقيق والنشر.
