هذا الكتاب لمؤلفه أبي إسماعيل عبد الله بم محمد الأنصاري الهروي، من ذرية أبي أيوب الأنصاري، المتوفي في ذي الحجة سنة إحدى وثمانين وأربعمائة، وأما الشارح فهو كمال الدين عبد الرزاق بن جما الدين أبو الغنائم القاساني. ومنازل السائرين أشهر كتاب في ذكر منازل النفس ألفه الأنصاري كما يقول: "لأن جماعة من الراغبين في الوقوف على منازل السائرين إلى الحق من الفقراء من أهل هراء والغرباء، طال علي مسألتهم إياي زماناً، أن أبين لهم في معرفتها بياناً، يكون على معالمها عنواناً، فأجبتهم بعد بذلك بعد استخارتي الله واستعانتي به".
وقد رتب المؤلف منازل النفس ترتيباً يسعى إلى تواليها ويدل على الفروع التي تليها، كما رتب المؤلف مقامات السائرين في عشرة هي الأصول والأمهات، تبدء بالبدايات وتنتهي بالنهايات وما بينهما ثماني مقامات متوسطات. ثم قسم كل مقام إلى عشرة أبواب، فصارت الأبواب مائة، ورتبت كل باب على ثلاث درجات: درجة العامة، ودرجة السالك، ودرجة المحقق،
وقد عمد المحقق إلى مقابلة النسخ التي توفرت له والتي رأى أنها كافية لإخراج الكتاب وتصحيحه فقام بضبط اختلافاتها في الهوامش، وعمل على ترقيم الآيات وتخريج الأحاديث والأقوال والأشعار الواردة وذكر ترجمة مختصرة للأعلام الواردة في الكتاب، ووضع الفهارس الغنية المتعددة اللازمة في آخر الكتاب.
