هناك أيام فى حياة الإنسان تمر في هدوء ورتابة، وهناك أيام تمر في نشوة عارمة، وأيام تمر في ضيق وكسل وأيام! ربنا يكفينا شرها. وكان هذا اليوم بالذات يبدو كئيباً طويلاً كأيامها الماضية، وبصفة خاصة لأن هذا هو يوم عيد ميلادها.. الأربعين.
وكانت قد أقسمت لنفسها منذ عشرين عاماً إنها في عيد ميلادها الأربعين سوف تقيم حفلاً كبيراً تدعو له زوجها، وأقارب زوجها، وأصدقاء أولادها، وكل الضباط، وكل الموظفين، وكل ربات البيوت، وكل من له سلطة وحق اتخاذ القرار،. وكل من يملك مصيره بيده، وكل من يصنع قدره، وكل العمال والفلاحين.
وعندما جاء اليوم، كانت هناء وحيدة وحدة تضيق منها القطط البرية في بيت امرأة عانس.
عانس! كلمة مخيفة ورهيبة.
ولكنها ليست عانساً، ولا تبدو في الأربعين علي الإطلاق. نظرت إلي نفسها في المرآة، تبدو في الثلاثين، ربما في العشرين، فحجمها ضئيل، ومعصمها رفيع ورقيق. وكيف تصاب المرأة بالكهولة؟ عندما يفقد معصمها رونقه!
