النص يتناول ماركس وكيف توصل إلى ما بات يعرف بـ: الماركسية، حيث يوضح صيرورة تطوره الفكري إلى أن تبلورت أفكاره، وتوصل إلى تأسيس إتجاه جديد كل الجدة.
مستنداً إلى كل التراث الفكري السابق له، والمتمثل في الفلسفة الألمانية، والإقتصاد السياسي الإنجليزي، والإشتراكية الفرنسية، وفكر عصر التنوير الأوروبي، الذي أرسى قيم الديمقراطية والمواطنية والعلمانية، محققاً تجاوزه دون أن يقطع معه، بل أعاد صياغته إنطلاقاً من منهجية جديدة هي الجدل المادي الذي كان بدوره التجاوز الجدلي لهيغل (الجدلي) وفيورباخ (المادي).
وهذا الكتاب يندرج ضمن "كراسات الماركسية" التي تهدف إلى تقديم سلسلة من الإتجاهات الفكرية والمعرفية والأدبية والفنية، بغرض التعريف بها وزيادة الوعي حولها، من خلال عدد من الكراسات تزيد أو تنقص، حسب ما يلزم كلّ موضوع تتناوله.
