التاريخ البشري لا يخرج من أن يكون صراعاً بين العبيد والسادة، وإن اختلفت الألوان والظروف والبيئات والمسميات.
يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن (ثورة العبيد في الإسلام) وخاصة العبيد الزنج فيما عرف بثورة الزيج الكبرى وقائدها علي بن محمد في العصر العباسي، وتحديداً في عهد الخليفة المعتضد وأخوه الموفق، هذه الثورة التي استمرت خمسة عشر عاماً هي الأحلك من عمر الخلافة العباسية.
وفي الكتاب يسلط المؤلف الأضواء على العوامل السياسية والإجتماعية، وكذلك الإقتصادية التي كانت وراء إندلاع ثورات العبيد في الإسلام والتي غالباً هي ذات منحى طبقي (عبيد / سادة) كما توغل المؤلف أيضاً في الكتب والمؤلفات التي تحدثت عن هذه الثورات مثل كتاب "محمد عمارة" المعنون بــ "ثورة الزنج"، و"ثورة العبيد في العراق" بقلم الكسندر بوبوفيتش ودراسة طه حسين التي حملت عنوان "ثورتان" التي تقوم على المقارنة بين ثورة سبارتكوس في العهد الروماني وثورة الزنج في العصر العباسي وكتاب "علي بن محمد الحماني" الشاعر في كتابه "صاحب الزنج" وكتب أخرى... شكلت مادة هذا الكتاب.
