يعد الإستقرار الإقتصادي في العراق مدخلاً مهماً لتحقيق الإستقرار السياسي والعكس صحيح أيضاً، وتنبع أهمية الإستقرار الإقتصادي في أنّه يؤدي إلى تحقيق التشغيل الكامل للموارد الإقتصادية المتاحة (المادية والبشرية)، وتفادي التغيرات الكبيرة في المستوى العام للأسعار مع الاحتفاظ بمعدل نمو حقيقي مناسب في الناتج الوطني، أي أنَّ مفهوم الإستقرار يتضمن هدفين أساسيين هما: الحفاظ على مستوى التشغيل الكامل للموارد الإقتصادية المتاحة، وتحقيق درجة مناسبة من الإستقرار في المستوى العام للأسعار، وهذا ما يعزز من الإستقرار السياسي. وبعبارة أخرى فإن تأثير العامل الإقتصادي في الإستقرار السياسي يأتي من وجود اختلالات هيكلية في الإقتصاد العراقي، وبنى تحتية مدمرة، ومعدلات عالية من البطالة وانتشار الفقر بين أفراد المجتمع، مع غياب الفلسفة الإقتصادية الواضحة وعدم ثابتها واعتماد الإقتصاد أحادي الجانب، فضلاً عن تفشي مظاهر الفساد المالي والإداري والسياسي، وكلها عوامل عمقت من حدة السخط الشعبي، وازداد الشعور بالتهميش والاضطهاد ممّا عمق من النزاعات الاجتماعيّة وزاد من حالة (عدم الرضا)، ما أثّر في شرعية النظام السياسي وبالتالي استقراره السياسي.
