تتعدد النظريات تبعاً للمنطق المدرسي لكل باحث، كما أنها تتفاوت من حيث أسلوب دراستها للجانح، فالدراسات النفسية عامة تنطلق من محاولة تحليل السلوك الجانح، من خلال البعد الذاتي للشخصية المنحرفة، ولا تهتم به كظاهرة إجتماعية أو جماعية، بل ترتكز على الجانح كفرد قائم بذاته.
أما مؤيدي الوجه الإجتماعي في تفسير ظاهرة الجنوح، نظراً إلى وجود في كل المجتمعات وفي جميع العصور كظاهرة إجتماعية فيميلون إلى إعطاء العوامل والمعايير الإجتماعية الأولوية في تفسير الظاهرة.
وأما الأبحاث الأنتروبولوجية، فقد أرجعت أسباب عنف الإعتداءات الجنسية للمفاهيم الثقافية الخاصة بكل مجتمع، ومن خلال مفهوم علاقة القوة بين الرجل والمرأة من جهة، ومن صورة المرأة الإجتماعية والإقتصادية السائدة فيه من جهة أخرى، دون من أن تتنكر لتعداد أشكال العنف الخاص في كل مجتمع.
إن بعض التيارات الحديثة تحاول دراسة العلاقة بين القوى الذاتية والقوى الخارجية، أي تفاعل الشخصية مع محيطها الإنساني معتبرة السلوك الجانح كمحصلة لهذا التفاعل.
في الواقع تعددت التفسيرات والنظريات في الجنوح ولكن بعض الإنحرافات لا تفهم إلا بالجمع بين عدد كبير من العوامل، ولفهم وتفسير سلوك الجانح نحو الإدمان والكحول والبغاء علينا تناول مجموعات من العوامل الداخلية والخارجية، فتتناول المجموعة الداخلية الغرائز والدوافع النفسية والبيولوجية، بينما المجموعة الخارجية تطال العوامل التربوية الإجتماعية البيئية، الثقافية والإقتصادية.
