نبذة النيل والفرات: عني الناس منذ القدم بتناقل أخبار الملوك ونوادرهم وأشعارهم. وأول من قام إلى هذه الغاية وعمل على تدوين أشعار الملوك هو الخليفة العباسي عبد الله بن المعتز وتبعه في ذلك عدد من الأدباء كأبي بكر الصولي وابن رشيق القيرواني وغيرهم. غير أن المؤلف الذي بين أيدينا قد جاء لتكملة النقص وتدارك الإهمال الذي لحق ببعض هؤلاء ببعض هؤلاء الملوك فبدء من العصر الجاهلي وانتهى بنهاية عصر الخلافة الإسلامية العربية في الأندلس موطئاً لكل شاعر ذكر حياته وأحداث عصره السياسية والاجتماعية وقد رأى المؤلف أن يضف كتابه وفقاً للأعصر الأدبية التي دأب مؤرخو الأدب على تقيم تاريخ الأدب إليها كالعصر الجاهلي والراشدي ثم الأموي والعباسي مروراً بالدولة الحمدانية بحلب والدولة الفاطمية بمصر وانتهاءً بالعصر الأموي الأندلسي وملوك الطوائف. وقد جاء الكتاب في خمسة مجلدات عزز كل مجلد منها بفهارس لأعلام الرجال والنساء ولأعلام القبائل والشعوب والفرق والممالك.
