يتناول هذا الكتاب قبيلة عربية أدت أدواراً مهمة في الجاهلية والإسلام وهي قبيلة (بجلية) كنموذج لما كان عليه المجتمع العربي قبل الإسلام، حيث تناول الكتاب دور قبيلة بجيلة في التاريخ العربي قبل الإسلام وبعده مستعرضاً نسب هذه القبيلة، وعلاقتها بالقبائل الأخرى قبل الإسلام، ودورها في الحياة الإجتماعية، ونشاطاتها الدينية، ودورها في الدعوة الإسلامية، وموقفها من حركة الردة، كما تناول دور هذه القبيلة في حركة الفتح العربي الإسلامي، مستعرضاً دورها في فتوح العراق والشام، وأقاليم المشرق، وكذلك موقفها من الفتن التي وقعت في الفترة محل الدراسة، وكذلك دورها في الفتح العربي في العصر الأموي.
ثم تناول علاقة فبيلة بجلية بأحزاب المعارضة، مثل ثورة الحسين بن علي، وحركة سليمان بن صرد الخزاعي (التوابون)، وحركة المختار بن أبي عبيد الثقفي والخوارج، ثم تناول الكتاب الدور السياسي لقبيلة بجيلة في العصر الأموي، متناولاً دورها في إدارة الدولة الأموية، ودورها في إسقاط هذه الدولة، وأخيراً ألقى الكتاب الضوء على الحياة الثقافية لقبيلة بجيلة، من حيث دورها في رواية الحديث الشريف والتاريخ، وأثرها في الحياة الأدبية.
