وتعاني بعض المناطق نقصان الماء بسبب عدم كفاية إدارة سكانها لمصادر الماء لديها، ويستقر الناس حينما يوجد الماء الوفير وذلك بجوار البحيرات والانهار، حيث تنمو المدن وتزدهر الصناعة.
وهنا دعت الحاجة العلماء إلى إيجاد أساليب وطرق علمية للتحكم في جودة الماء والحفاظ عليه من التلوث والتدهور، وابتكار طرق وتقنيات حديثة لتنقية ومعالجة المياه من أجل توفير المياه النقية لشرب واستعمال الإنسان على الأرض.
