صاحب هذا الكتاب هو ابو بكر بن علي بن عبد الله التقي الحموي المعروف بابن حجة، أحد أعيان القرن التاسع عشر في الشعر والزجل والكتابة والتأليف. ولد في حماه 767 هـ ونشأ بها وحفظ القرآن من طفولته، وكانت له فطرة تهوى الأدب وتنزع إليه، وشكل حياته بالتأليف والتصنيف، فوضع كثيراً من الكتب والرسائل ومختارات من الشعر والنثر. وكتابه "ثمرات الأوراق" واحد من مؤلفاته وهو من الكتب الأدبية التي شفق بها الأدباء في مطالع هذا العصر، وذلك لما حداه من محاسن الآداب، ومنتخب الطرف والنتف والأخبار، والمصطفى من الأشعار، والطريق من الرسائل والرحلات، مما اختاره من كتب الأدب والتاريخ.
ساق كل ذلك دون ترتيب أو تبويب أو عقد فصول أو عنوانات، رغبة من المؤلف في إمتاع القارئ، وإعانته على استيعابه دون ملل أو كلل، فهو يأخذ في حكاية عن عن النحاة، إلى أخرى عن الفقهاء، ثم إلى ترجمة لإحدى الفرق إلى فصل عن الملوك، يسوق كل ذلك في سهولة وسير، مروحاً بذلك عن النفس، ومثقفاً به الفكر.
