يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن رحلة الرّحالة الإنجليزي "جورج ميغان" الشهيرة، التي تُعدّ أطول رحلة في التاريخ سيراً على الأقدام، إذ بدأت الرحلة في عام 1977 وانتهت في عام 1983، واجتازَ صاحبُها خلال ذلك 30 ألف كيلو متر، ولأنه لم يكن يملكُ في جعبته إلا قليلاً من المال، فقد اعتمد على كرَم الأهالي في المناطق التي مرّ فيها وضيافتهم.
قد تبدو هذه الرحلة رومانسيةً بالنسبة لشخصٍ لم يمشِ في حياته سوى كيلومترات محدودة مشياً متصلاً على قدميه، لكنّ صاحبها في حقيقة الأمر واجهَ الكثير من المشاق التي وضعته أمام اختبارٍ متكرر، أن ينساق وراء ضعفه ويتراجع، أو يتمسك بإرادته ويستمر.
وفي النهاية نجح "ميغان" في قطع الكرة الأرضية من أقصى نقطة في الجنوب إلى أقصى نقطة في الشمال في رحلةٍ امتدت سبعَ سنين متّصلة.
وقد يتساءل القارئ عن جدوى مثل هذه الرحلة، وهو السؤال الذي طرحه كثيرون مرّ بهم "ميغان" فكان يقدّم لكلّ منهم إجابة تناسب طبيعة الشخص والموقف والظروف المحيطة، لكن الإجابة الحقيقية هي التي يوردها "ميغان" بقوله: "السبب الحقيقي وراء مسيري يخالف كل ذلك تماماً؛ وقد رُحت، ذات مرّة، أردّده أثناء مسيري في الجنوب، إذ كان القمر يضيء دربي بنوره الساطع، وقد تناثرت من حوله النجوم المتلألئة اللامعة، وحينها نظرتُ إلى السماء الشاسعة، وهمست لنفسي، لا يوجد مكان أفضل البقاء فيه أكثر من هذا".
